Unsolicited Advice Part 2

Presented by: Coach Anthony Miller

The car ride home...

I would like to offer you some unsolicited advice. This advice is backed by 16+ years of training and coaching experience, take it or leave.

Post-game: nothing negative.

I have a firm rule when it comes to talking to my kids after a game: I don't. Trust me, it is one of the hardest things to do as a parent, but it is extremely beneficial.

Before I adopted this practice, I would tell my boys about all the things they could have done differently. Then I realized how contradicting that was to the message I gave them before the game started, which was simply to do their best.

I realized that post-game criticism, regardless of how constructive I thought it was, negated that initial premise. The actual message it sent was that their best was not good enough unless it produced a desired outcome. That creates unnecessary pressure and disrupts the joy of playing.

So, my advice is to shy away from the post-game critique. If you feel compelled to say something, strictly focus on effort and highlights.

Sincerely,

Coach Miller
